About the Project
Seeing his speech and hearing-impaired cousin overwhelmed with anxiety due to poor communication on a daily basis, Sherif set his eyes on designing a device that will help him navigate life a little bit easier. During his time on Stars of Science, he developed a technology designed to pair the sounds and spoken word of the speech-impaired and translate them into clearer speech as either recorded voice or as text. The Speech Synthesizer for the Language Impaired allows the user to input their personal use of language and translate it into a standardized language that can be used in real-life situations.
After winning fourth place in Season 5, the software engineer redesigned his innovation and migrated the technology’s data to a cloud software to better fit the modern demand. Although it serves a niche market that does not have a spotlight in the region, Sherif says: “It is still a work in progress, and I have not given up on the dream of reaching my ultimate goal which is improving the daily lives of the speech and hearing-impaired. Not securing a patent for my technology gives the freedom to other like-minded innovators interested in advancing it.”
Beyond Stars of Science
A senior software engineer expert in Germany, Sherif wanted to merge both his passion for engineering and film to pursue a more creative field that aspires to deliver a valiant message. Working on multiple creative projects that speak to Arabs around the world, he is currently filming a short documentary following the lives of the Egyptian diaspora in Germany during Eid celebrations.
The role model is also focusing on his main passion by starting an educational YouTube channel to help aspiring Arab engineers. “Film should both reflect and used to inspire people’s lives. Filming creative projects by Arabs for Arabs has always been a dream of mine - an outlet for my creativity and a way to give back to my community.”
Personal Reflection
Sherif credits his participation on Stars of Science as the point in time he truly started to believe in himself and pursue excellence. The experiences and skills he gained during his journey on the show opened many new doors and horizons that seemed impossible to reach. Of course, his journey was also full of sacrifices such as being away for the birth of his daughter: “Although it was really difficult to miss her birth, my daughter will always know that her father dedicated himself to the betterment of his community selflessly.”
Speaking to the Arab youth, Sherif says: “The human capabilities that we have here in the Arab region are underrated and incomparable. Never give up and have faith in yourself - I can assure you that more opportunities will emerge to make your success a reality!”
