Project & Impact
Mohammed Al-Qassabi embodies the dynamism of Qatar's burgeoning scientific scene. He turned his passion for football into a groundbreaking project presented in Season 13 of Stars of Science. His invention, the Football Offside Detection System, aims to address the often-contentious offside rule in football. The system uses ultra-wideband tags embedded in players’ uniforms and the ball to track real-time positions during a match. It continually analyses this data to accurately detect potential offside situations, thus providing critical support to referees whose decisions often face intense scrutiny. Mohammed's innovation holds significant potential beyond its immediate impact on match officiating. The system's capability to collect data about players' movements during a game offers valuable insights that can be used to improve training regimes. Players' performance trends can be identified and analysed, fostering individual improvement and team strategy development.
Aftermath of SoS
Muhammad's journey is a compelling testament to innovation and tenacity. After meticulously developing his groundbreaking invention, he demonstrated its potential in numerous local and international competitions, culminating in an impressive accolade as the fifth-best inventor globally in 2021.
But Muhammad's momentum didn't stop there. Seizing the opportunity to push his project to the next level, he engaged in discussions with FIFA, the international governing body of football. His innovative idea was warmly received and is now undergoing thorough scrutiny to determine its compatibility with FIFA regulations, the suitability of the electronic chips, and its potential application in real-world match scenarios.
In recognition of his impressive achievements, including his participation in Stars of Science, Muhammad was honored by His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. It is an acknowledgment that further amplifies Muhammad's dedication to innovation, lighting the way for future inventors to follow in his footsteps.
