About the project
On Season 7, Yaman Abou Jieb gained in a big way. The Syrian tech tinkerer went on to win Stars of Science with his solar washing machine innovation Glean. The idea was born out of necessity to help his community. Yaman had witnessed first-hand constant power cuts and water shortages. Understanding that washing machines require an abundance of both electricity and water, he sought to devise a way to mitigate the disruption caused by their absence.

Omar’s invention, Sanda, is a specialized chair that supports worshippers who need physical assistance while praying. Five times a day, Muslims perform the act of worship, which involves standing, prostrating, and sitting. Those who are physically unable to stand for long periods of time, or are otherwise impaired, usually use chairs. Sanda is designed to support worshippers with assistive sitting and standing features. Omar’s reimagined chair could positively benefit the quality of life of millions of potential users around the world.

About the Project
Maymoona’s project, “Date Pits Filter in Desalination”, is aimed at desalinating water with the use of ground date seeds as a filter and distiller, rendering the water safe to drink. With the growing population and the diminishing sources of clean water, there is an urgent need to find effective desalination methods the soonest possible, especially in the Middle East. Maymoona’s device would render the desalination process easier and more cost-effective.
